Hepatitis B causes 29 deaths in Uganda’s West Nile Region

Health officials in Uganda’s West Nile region have reported 29 deaths due to hepatitis B. The actual number of deaths is suspected to be considerably more, since not all deaths due to hepatitis are reported. The deaths are concentrated in the northwestern districts of Moyo and Adjumani. The total number of cases of this infection is not reported. Travellers should be aware that hepatitis B is preventable through vaccination. When there is a risk of exposure to hepatitis B virus, travellers can reduce this risk by exercising caution and avoiding contact with body fluids, unscreened blood transfusions and unsterilized needles and syringes.
