Hepatitis E outbreak in Napak District in Uganda

The Ministry of Health is warning the local population of Napak district that there is an outbreak of hepatitis E. So far, 13 people have died, 10 of whom were pregnant women. A total of 344 cases have been reported. Hepatitis E virus generally causes an infection with no or mild symptoms. It usually resolves in 4-6 weeks with no special treatment. The disease can be more severe in pregnant women. Since this virus is transmitted mostly through contaminated drinking water, travellers can reduce the risk of exposure by following strict water and food safety precautions.
