High health alert in Dominican Republic as cholera continues to spread

To date, health authorities have reported a total of 6,838 cases of cholera. A high health alert is in effect for the provinces of Espaillat, Puerto Plata, Santo Domingo, the National District, Santiago, Santiago Rodríguez, La Romana, Montecristi, San Juan, San Pedro de Macorís and Monseñor Nouel. Travellers to these areas can reduce the risk of exposure to cholera by strictly observing all food and water precautions. If visiting these areas and if gastrointestinal symptoms develop, e.g., vomiting and watery diarrhoea, travellers should seek medical care at once.
