High levels of dengue fever in the state of São Paulo, Brazil

In the state of São Paulo, 3 cities (Sorocaba, Catanduva and São Paulo) have reported approximately 18,000 cases of dengue fever. Across the state, 30 of the 645 municipalities report two thirds of the 57,000 cases this year. At least 119 municipalities have reached epidemic levels. There have been 67 recorded deaths.

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
