High number of cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever in Oaxaca, Mexico

Although only 47 cases of dengue fever have been reported across the state of Oaxaca, roughly half of the cases have the more serious form of the disease, dengue haemorrhagic fever. This is an unusual percentage of severe cases. The most affected areas include Salina Cruz, Santa María Mixtequilla, El Nuevo Porvenir, Boca del Monte, Estación de Mogoñé, Juchitán and Matías Romero.

There may be many more unreported cases since counting and reporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
