High rate of drug resistant tuberculosis in India

According to a World Health Organization report, India is reported to have the highest rate of tuberculosis that is resistant to multiple antibiotics. In 2013, among the almost 1,500,000 reported cases of TB, there were slightly more than 23,000 drug resistant cases.

The average traveller is at low risk of becoming infected with TB during their travels since becoming infected usually requires prolonged exposure to an environment where there is someone with active tuberculosis. However, travellers can reduce their risk of exposure to TB by avoiding situations where TB transmission is likely to occur, e.g., poorly ventilated spaces with close contact with persons who are coughing and who have active TB.
