High risk areas for dengue fever identified in Peru

Following the detection of 20 cases of virulent dengue fever infections in Satipo, an emergency committee designated the following areas as high risk areas: Mazamari, Río Negro, Cuenca Del Río Ene in Río Tambo District; and the towns of Villa Luz, San Francisco, Santa Leonor, Concordia, Progreso, Jorge Chávez, José Olaya, and Los Frutales, among others.

There may be many more cases of dengue that are not reported. Counting and reporting cases may be difficult due to lack of local access to health care. Many persons with mild illness do not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
