High season for plague in Madagascar

In total, since the beginning of the year, 250 cases of plague have been reported, with 90 of those occurring since early October. Approximately 1 out of every 5 patients has died, likely due to failure to seek treatment early in the course of the infection. With heat and frequent rain, this is the high season for plague infections in Madagascar. Travellers can reduce the risk of exposure to plague by taking all necessary measures to avoid flea bites in areas where plague commonly occurs.
