Hospital-based outbreak of the MERS virus in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

There are reports of a hospital based outbreak of the respiratory MERS virus in a military hospital in Riyadh. A total of 81 cases have been associated with exposure in a single hospital. Authorities have implemented measures, such as closing the implicated emergency room, to prevent further spread.

Advice For Travellers

The MERS virus causes a severe flu-like respiratory illness with significant mortality in the elderly and in persons with other chronic medical conditions. However, the risk for the general traveller is very low, since the implicated hospital provides care only for military personnel and their families. There is no need to alter travel plans to Saudi Arabia or planned itineraries within the country.
