Increase in cutaneous (skin) leishmaniasis in Saudi Arabia

Authorities are warning the public that there has been an increase in reported cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis (the skin form of this infection). Several people have been diagnosed with this disease in the Eastern Province [Ash Sharqiyah].

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (also known as oriental sore, tropical sore, chiclero ulcer, or chiclero's ulcer) is the most common form of leishmaniasis affecting humans. Travellers to this region can reduce their risk of exposure to leishmaniasis by taking all necessary precautions to avoid sand fly bites.

Visit our Health Library for more information on exposure to and the prevention of Leishmaniasis.
