Increase in dengue fever concerns health officials in Jakarta, Indonesia

A sudden increase in dengue fever deaths in January has caused concern among health officials. Thirteen people died from dengue infections in Tangerang and Greater Jakarta where reports of infected people increased 38%.

The risk of exposure to dengue fever may vary from place to place, but this infection occurs throughout Indonesia. All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
