Increase in rabies deaths in Tamil Nadu, India

Two women in Madurai who were bitten by stray dogs died from rabies while receiving treatment. An increase in the number of stray dogs in various local areas may lead to the spread of rabies in the dog population with a high risk for spread to humans. Previously, a total of 5 persons have died from rabies in the last 3 months alone.

In general, Sitata does not publish alerts regarding rabies since the virus is so common in so many parts of the world. However, in this case, the concentration of human rabies infections in both time and place warrants reminding travellers of the risk of exposure to rabies from contact with stray dogs, cats and other animals.
