Increase in rotavirus infections in El Salvador

Since the start of 2015, there have been 231 confirmed cases of rotavirus, 124 of whom were diagnosed in the past 3 weeks. Only 20 cases were reported in the same time period last year. Children under the age of five are most affected. Departments reporting the most cases include San Salvador, Cuscatlan, Santa Ana, La Paz, San Vicente, La Libertad and San Miguel.

Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe diarrhea among infants and young children. Severe cases may be fatal. This virus is found in nearly every country in the world. However, it can be successfully treated with fluids to avoid dehydration. The risk of exposure can be reduced by following food and water precautions.
