Increase in Severe Form of Malaria in India

Based on a study of 2,300 patients with malaria-like symptoms, researchers conclude that there is an on-going drastic shift in the type of malaria occurring in India. There is an increase in the number of severe infections (caused by the malaria strain called falciparum) instead of the mild form of malaria (caused by the strain called vivax).

Advice

The emergence of more cases of the severe form of malaria adds even more emphasis for the general traveller to follow all precautions, including anti-malaria medications, to prevent exposure to an infection with malaria.
