Increase in shigellosis in Israel

Although cases of dysentery (shigellosis) usually increase during the summer months, Israeli Health Ministry officials have reported a significan increase in registered cases this summer compared to past summers. At least 300 cases of children diagnosed with this infection have been reported. The most affected areas are Jerusalem and Ashkelon.

Advice For Travellers

The exposure risk for the average traveller is probably low, provided the traveller exercises caution and follows strict water and food precautions while travelling. Food and water that are contaminated with human waste from infected persons is a common source for these bacteria.
