Increases in avian respiratory virus H7N9 reported in Guangdong, China

In addition to the 83 cases of the serious avian respiratory flu virus H7N9 diagnosed from December 2014 to January 2015, there are now 50 new cases of this infection reported by 15 of 21 prefectures. Of these, 12 have died. Although the risk of exposure for travellers remains low, visits to live poultry markets should be avoided since various strains of avian flu may be circulating in these markets.
