Increases in reported whooping cough (pertussis) in various locations in USA

Multiple health jurisdictions are reporting increases in cases of whooping cough (pertussis). Recent reports have been received from the following areas:

  • Santa Cruz County, California
  • Portage, Clark, Marathon and Wood Counties in Wisconsin
  • Montrose County, Colorado
Local health officials are warning the population to ensure that they have been vaccinated against this infection. While the risk for travellers is low travellers are reminded that outbreaks of highly contagious pertussis (whooping cough) can occur anywhere in the world at anytime. Travellers can reduce their risk of exposure to this disease by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations and their current immune status for pertussis are up-to-date prior to travelling.
