Increasing dengue fever in Paraguay

So far this year, there have been almost 2,500 people infected with the dengue fever virus. However, these are just the people who have had positive laboratory tests. There are another 45,000 people who are probably infected but not yet tested. An even greater number of infected people never go to a health centre and are not counted in official statistics.

Advice For Travellers

The risk of exposure across Paraguay will vary from place to place and may be high in many localities.

All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
