India: Students to Protest Near Parliament in Delhi, Prohibitory Orders Issued

Students of New Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) plans to stage a protest on 18 November near the Indian Parliament House in New Delhi. The authorities have imposed prohibitory orders in all areas near the Parliament House, banning the assembly of more than four people. More than 1000 police personnel have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order. The students are protesting against a recent decision to hike hostel fees in JNU.

Advice

A similar protest by JNU students on 11 November turned violent and witnessed clashes with security forces. Travellers should expect increased police presence and security checks in areas close to the Parliament House. Vehicular movement may also be restricted. Plan routes bypassing the affected area to minimize inconvenience. To mitigate safety risks, avoid areas of large public gatherings or protests. Even events intended to be peaceful can escalate unexpectedly and quickly become violent.
