Intense hurricane MATTHEW damages Haiti and continues north along the coast of USA

Intense hurricane MATTHEW caused extensive damage and loss of life in southwestern Haiti. At least 300 people died. Extensive loss of crops and domestic animals will result in long term effects on food supplies. Flooding raises the risk of more cholera outbreaks.

Mass evacuations are taking place along the eastern coast of the USA, and storm warnings have been issued for many cities as far north as Wilmington, Delaware.

Advice For Travellers

Although the storm's intensity has decreased slightly, it is still a dangerous one with strong winds and heavy rains. Travellers in the path of this storm should seek shelter and consult local weather reports.
