International Assistance to Contain Hepatitis E Outbreak in Namibia

The World Health Organization, the United Nations Population Fund, and UNICEF are assisting the Namibian government to contain the outbreak of Hepatitis E that began in October 2017. So far, more than 800 people are suspected of having contracted this illness, while five people have died. The outbreak is affecting the outskirts of the national capital, Windhoek.

Advice

Hepatitis E virus generally causes an infection with mild symptoms or no symptoms at all. It usually resolves in 4-6 weeks with no special treatment. This virus is transmitted mostly in crowded populations with contaminated water supplies and a lack of sanitation. Pregnant women suffer disproportionately high mortality from hepatitis E. Travellers can reduce the risk of exposure by following strict water and food safety precautions.
