Italian stuffed olives contaminated with dangerous botulism toxin

Italian organic olives stuffed with almonds produced by Bio Gaudiano, Italy, are being recalled by many countries. The jars and cans of this product may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium which can cause life-threatening illness or death. Two cases, one of whom has died, were hospitalized in Finland. Botulism is a potentially fatal form of food poisoning. Symptoms include general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also be common symptoms.

Travellers who may have purchased this product should discard it at once. Travellers who experience the above symptoms after consuming the olives should seek immediate medical attention.
