Ivory Coast rebels stage new protests

On May 22, hundreds of demobilized former rebels protested in the central city of Bouake, as well as Korhogo. The protesters are demanding government compensation. This protest is the latest of ongoing armed protests since January. Police dispersed about 50 demobilized rebels who attempted to block the Corridor de Abidjan-Yopougon Gesco, the northern entrance to Abidjan.

Advice

Anyone travelling in Côte d’Ivoire should be aware of the ongoing political tensions with former rebels. Monitor local media for developments. Protests can erupt unexpectedly. To minimize safety risk, avoid areas with large crowds or protests, since these protests have turned violent. Roads could be blocked with little notice.
