Landmine explodes in flooded area of Bosnia

A landmine exposed by flooding in the Balkans exploded in Bosnia today. No one was injured, but this incident highlights the dangers of the more than 120,000 mines left from the Yugoslav wars in the 1990s. Authorities have also found a refrigerator containing nine explosive devices, a bin full of bombs and ammunition, and a rocket launcher.

Travellers to the Balkans should be aware that the devastating floods have dislodged explosive devices and exercise caution. Iron mines can be easily washed away and plastic mines can float like plastic plates.
