Laos is experiencing a severe epidemic of dengue fever

Laos is experiencing on the the worst dengue fever epidemics in its history. With over 14,000 reported cases of the infection along with 50 deaths, there has been a 10 fold increase compared to the same period last year. More cases are expected as the rainy season progresses. One of the hardest hit areas is Champassak Province. The capital Vientiane has reported about 1,300 infections with 1 death so far.

There may be many more unreported cases since counting and reporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
