Large increase in reported cases of dengue fever in Negros Occidental, Philippines

So far this year there have been 1,538 reported cases of dengue fever with 2 deaths. This is 5 times the number of cases recorded last year for the same time period. The most affected municipalities include Talisay City, Victorias City, Kabankalan City, San Carlos City, and Bago. There may be many more unreported cases since counting and reporting may be hampered by lack of local access to health care, and many persons with mild illness may not seek health care. Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure to dengue fever virus by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
