Large outbreak of dengue fever expanding on Yap, Micronesia

Health authorities have reported a total of 286 cases of dengue fever with almost 70 hospitalizations. Given that the total population of the island is approximately 15,000 people, this is a significant outbreak.

Travellers to this area should be aware of the risk of exposure to dengue fever virus and take all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever may not seek medical care and may not be reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community that are not reported.
