Large scale outbreak of diarrhoea in Alagoas State, Brazil

Due to wide spread use of contaminated water, there has been an on-going extensive outbreak of diarrhoea involving both bacteria and some viruses across Alagoas. A total of 47 people have died and more than 70,000 cases have been registered. At least 25 municipalities have been affected. There are many bacteria, viruses and parasites that can contaminate water supplies and lead to diarrhoea. Travellers in this state should exercise caution and follow strict water and food safety precautions.
