Legionellosis deaths in Lithuania

An emergency health alert has been declared in Vilnius after legionella bacteria were found in the water supplies of several apartment buildings, specifically in 2 apartment blocks in the Zirmunai neighborhood, at Tuskulenu 5, and Ladygos 3. A third apartment block in the Lazdynai neighborhood is still being tested. So far, 2 residents have died and a third person is receiving medical treatment. Approximately 500 residents of these apartments remain at risk.

Advice

Travellers who might be visiting friends and relatives who reside at these locations should consider avoiding these buildings while corrective actions are implemented.

Legionnaires Disease usually occurs following exposure to warm water aerosols since the bacteria are inhaled through water droplets in water sprays or mists. Exposure can occur in or around hot tubs, showers, or from air conditioning systems in buildings with poorly maintained cooling towers.

Travellers who develop serious respiratory symptoms after being in air conditioned buildings or other environments that generate sprays in the outbreak area should seek medical care as soon as possible.
