Leishmaniasis affects department of Tolima, Colombia

While there have been 2,534 reported cases of leishmaniasis nationwide, several municipalities in the department of Tolima have experienced significant outbreaks. The affected municipalities include Sivigila, San Antonio, and Planadas. The cities of Chaparral, Rioblanco and Rovira have reported increases in the number of infections in both adults and children.

Advice For Travellers

While the risk of exposure to leishmaniasis is low for the the general traveller, the risk may be high in some localities. Travellers to these areas can reduce their risk of exposure to leishmaniasis by taking all necessary precautions to avoid sand fly bites.
