Lepstospirosis causes 78 deaths due to exposure to rat and animal waste

A total of 78 deaths due to leptospirosis have been reported from Kurunegala, Gampaha, Kalutara and Hambantota Districts so far this year. Most of the cases have been farmers and children who are exposed while working in paddies and other water related agriculture.

Travellers to these areas should be aware or the risk of exposure to leptospirosis and avoid contact with water contaminated with rat and animal waste.
