Local transmission of chikungunya in Var, France

The Regional Agency for Health (ARS) Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (PACA) has reported a case of chikungunya fever in the prefecture of Var. This person had no history of travel and was infected by the bite of a locally infected mosquito. There have been several hundred cases of this infection diagnosed in travellers returning to France, mostly from the Caribbean region.

While the risk that a traveller will acquire chikungunya while visiting France is low, the risk can be further minimized by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with chikungunya fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be more cases in the community that are not reported.
