Lsssa fever occurs sporadically in many states in Nigeria

So far this year, there have been 104 cases of Lassa fever reported nationwide. Three people have died. Sporadic cases occur in 10 of Nigeria's states, including Bauch, Borno, Edo, Gombe, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Ondo, Plateau, and Taraba.

Advice For Travellers

Although most infections are mild, Lassa fever can be a severe viral haemorrhagic illness in 1 out of every 5 infected people. Since this infection is transmitted to humans through contact with food or household items that are contaminated with rodent excreta, travellers should avoid contact with rats, especially rat urine and faeces. Travellers should also practice careful personal hygiene such as frequent hand washing and avoid contact with sick patients.
