Magnitude 8.0 earthquake occurs off east coast of Papua New Guinea

A preliminary magnitude 8.0 earthquake has struck off the east coast of Papua New Guinea, 46 kilometers east of Taron. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has stated that widespread hazardous tsunami waves are possible. There are no reports of injuries or damage at this time.
