Major 7.9 magnitude earthquake strikes of coast of Papua New Guinea

A major 7.9 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea, 40 kilometers (24 miles) west of the town of Panguna. Although an initial tsunami warning has been rescinded, waves 1 meter above the usual tide level may occur along the coast of Papua New Guinea and in the Solomon Islands. There are no reports yet of damages or casualties.
