Major dengue fever epidemic in Taiwan

The total number of cases of dengue fever in the current epidemic in Taiwan has surpassed 12,350 cases. In one day a record 746 cases were reported, including 639 cases of Tainan City, which is the most affected municipality. Other municipalities reporting cases include Kaohsiung, Taipei and Taoyuan. Counties that are reporting cases include Pingtung, Hsinchu, Ilan, and Yunlin. There have been up to 60 deaths so far.

Advice For Travellers

There is a major epidemic of dengue fever occurring this year in Taiwan. All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
