Major dengue fever problem in Cali, Colombia

One out of every 5 reported cases of dengue fever in Colombia have occurred in the city of Cali. So far, at least 14,000 people have been infected in the city, and 92 of them have had the severe form of dengue (dengue haemorrhagic fever). Nationally, more than 860 municipalities have reported dengue cases.

Advice For Travellers

The risk of exposure will vary from place to place and may be high in many localities in Colombia.

All travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
