Major earthquake hits southern Japan

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck at 21:26 (local time) on Thursday evening, April 14, seven miles from the town of Mashiki in the Kumamoto prefecture. At least nine people were killed and more than 800 injured. There are reports of severe damage to buildings and roads.

No tsunami warning was issued.
