Major epidemic of dengue fever across state of São Paulo, Brazil

It is becoming apparent that the number of dengue fever cases across the state of São Paulo will be the highest since 1987 (almost 30 years). More than 250,000 cases have been reported along with 99 deaths. Among the most affected cities are Campinas, Sorocaba, and the city of São Paulo. Among the 645 municipalities in this state, 280 have reached epidemic levels for dengue fever.

Travellers to areas where the dengue fever virus is active can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Many persons with dengue fever do not seek medical care and are not reported to health authorities. There may be many more cases in the community than the reports indicate.
