Major outbreak of deadly E.coli infections in Honduras

An outbreak of the bacteria E.coli in the town of Santo Domingo Xenacoj has resulted in 96 people being hospitalised. Four people, including 2 children, have died. The source of the infections is felt to be contaminated fruits and vegetables. Travellers can reduce the risk of exposure to the many germsthat cause intestinal illness (such as E.coli and many others) by avoiding consumption of contaminatedfood and water (especially when sold by street vendors) and by practisingcareful personal hygiene with frequent hand washing.
