Major outbreak of typhoid fever continues in Zambia

Health officials have recorded 4,396 cases of typhoid since the epidemic began 3 months ago. There have been 9 deaths so far. The cases have been reported from Kalabo, Mufulira, Nakonde and Lusaka.

Travellers to these areas can reduce their risk of exposure to typhoid fever by being cautious and avoiding consuming contaminated food or water. Vaccination against typhoid fever should be considered, especially if unsafe food cannot be avoided.
