Major polio outbreak continues in Somalia

For the first time in the last 6 years, there is a major outbreak of polio in Somalia involving at least 20 new cases (total so far is now 73 cases). Immunization campaigns are underway to control the epidemic. Previously, the only countries reporting polio cases were Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. Travellers in any country that reports cases of polio can reduce their risk of exposure to polio virus by ensuring that their childhood vaccinations, including polio, are up-to-date prior to travelling.
