Malaria at epidemic levels in Bolivar, Venezuela

So far, there have been 45,000 cases of malaria reported nationwide. However, malaria has reached epidemic proportions in the south of Bolivar state, and especially in the town of Sifontes, where 8 out of every 10 people have malaria. Illegal mining operations with transient populations make treatment and control of malaria very difficult.

Travellers to any region where malaria transmission is occurring can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Anti-malaria medication is recommended.
