Malaria cases decrease in October in Cape Verde - update

The number of new cases of malaria reported in the month of October (34 cases) is less than the previous month (132 cases). So far this year, there have been over 300 people infected with malaria, most of whom acquired the illness in the city of Praia. This year has been the worst year for malaria in the past 30 years.

Advice

All travellers to any region where malaria transmission is occurring can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. If the traveller is visiting the city of Praia for a period of time, anti-malaria medication may be considered, at least for the duration of this outbreak.
