Malaria epidemic in Bolivar Department, Venezuela

More than 90 percent of the 38,000 reported cases of malaria in Venezuela occur in Bolivar Department. Many of the cases are associated with illegal mining activities where control measures are not available. Travellers to this region can reduce their risk of exposure to malaria by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Anti-malaria medication is recommended.
