Malaria in Bolivia

After 3 years without detection of a single case of the severe strain of malaria (called falciparum), an outbreak of 12 cases was detected in the departments of the Beni (city of Guayaramerín), and Pando (city of Sena). Authorities have initiated control measures to contain the spread of this infection.

Advice

All travellers to any region where malaria transmission is occurring can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Anti-malaria medication is recommended.
