Malaria in Burundi reported to be out of control

The Ministry of Health is reported to be taking steps to stop the alarming malaria epidemic that has continued to increase over the last three years. So far this year, approximately 6 million people have been infected, of whom 3,000 have died. Malaria is the leading cause of death in this country.

All travellers to any region where malaria transmission is occurring can reduce their risk of exposure by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Anti-malaria medication is recommended.
