Malaria in parts of Venezuela reported out of control

Data on the number of malaria cases recorded so far this year are not available, but last year an estimated 210,000 people were infected, mostly in the state of Amazonas. Other states reporting cases last year included Bolívar, Sucre, Nueva Esparta, Apure, Zulia and Vargas. Health authorities are concerned that the situation this year may be worse than last year due to the severe economic situation in the country and its effect on medical supplies and services.
