Malaria in the Dominican Republic can be deadly

Although reported malaria cases are fewer than last year, so far in 2012, a total of 816 cases of malaria and 10 deaths have been reported, mostly from Dajabón Province. Travellers to this region can reduce their risk of exposure to malaria by taking all necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Anti-malaria medication should be considered.
