Malaria infections and deaths are common in parts of India

According to reports, a total of 115 people have died of malaria in India since the beginning of 2011. A total of 440,301 cases of malaria have been reported during the same time period. Since these summanry statistics only record cases and deaths through June, there are undoubtedly more cases and deaths.

The highest number of malaria deaths were reported from Maharashtra, followed by Assam and Mizoram, as well as Gujarat.

Travellers should be aware of the areas where malaria transmission is on-going and take all the necessary precautions to avoid mosquito bites when visiting these areas. In areas where malaria exposure is common, anti-malaria medication is recommended.
